The Furuno FAX‑408 is a self‑contained, marine-grade weather facsimile (weatherfax) receiver designed to receive and print weather charts and satellite imagery aboard vessels. It operates across the HF spectrum—2 to 25 MHz in 100 Hz steps—with 150 factory‑programmed channels and storage for an additional 164 user‑defined channels. The unit uses a synthesized double superheterodyne receiver to ensure sensitivity and selectivity, and it supports both automatic and manual selection of channel, IOC, phase alignment, and speed. The printed output appears on 8‑inch wide thermal paper, with nine levels of gray tone reproduction, using electronic scanning plus a thermal print head for quiet and reliable operation. The FAX‑408 includes a built-in scheduler, allowing up to 16 automatic receive programs per week, and will automatically select the channel with the best signal quality. It draws power from 12 V or 24 V DC (at ~1.15 to 2.3 A), is tolerant of marine operating conditions (typically –10 °C to +50 °C, up to 95% relative humidity), and is built with minimal mechanical components to reduce noise and wear. As such, it provides vessels a dependable means of receiving up-to-date meteorological information even when disconnected from centralized communications networks.
