The McMurdo S4 Rescue is a compact 9 GHz X-band Search and Rescue Radar Transponder (SART) designed to help locate survivors in lifeboats and liferafts. When interrogated by a 9 GHz marine radar, the S4 Rescue automatically transmits a response that appears on the searching vessel’s radar as a distinctive series of 12 dots, allowing rescuers to identify the survival craft.
The unit is buoyant, waterproof, lightweight and equipped with an audio/visual indication of operation. It has a replaceable battery with a 5-year replacement interval and provides more than 96 hours in standby, followed by at least 8 hours of transmission when continuously interrogated.
