The Sperry Marine NAVIKNOT Multisensor Speed Log Series (comprising models 350E, 450D, 600S, 600SE, and 600SD) is a modular, high-precision Speed and Distance Measuring Equipment (SDME) platform. Designed for all types and sizes of vessels—from commercial tankers and container ships to mega-yachts—it combines traditional electromagnetic and acoustic Doppler technologies with satellite-based GNSS tracking.
Operating Principles
1. Electromagnetic Sensing (350E & 600SE)
Utilizes an alternating magnetic field generated by an AC excitation coil in the hull-mounted sensor. As conductive seawater moves past the sensor, it creates an electrical potential directly proportional to ship speed through water.
2. Doppler Transducer (450D & 600SD)
Emits high-frequency ultrasonic sound pulses (fore and aft) into undisturbed water layers beyond the hull’s boundary layer. The frequency shift of the returned echoes is computed to determine precise fore/aft STW.
3. Satellite Sensing (600S, 600SE, & 600SD)
Employs a dual-antenna GNSS receiver array integrated with rate gyros to calculate heading, rate of turn, longitudinal SOG, and bow/stern transverse SOG for docking maneuvers.
