The JRC JAN-9201 and JAN-7201 are high-performance Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) built on JRC’s Multi-Function Display (MFD) hardware architecture. They are designed for SOLAS-compliant commercial vessels, offering high-speed chart drawing, flexible interface configurations, and intuitive voyage planning tools.
System Description & Overview
1. Intuitive User Interface (jGUI)
-
Uses JRC’s icon-based jGUI interface, designed to keep critical navigational information in fixed screen zones while using clean drop-down menus and pop-ups for target data.
-
Fast chart redraw engine eliminates latency when zooming, panning, or switching chart scales.
2. Hardware & Display Configurations
-
JAN-9201: 26-inch WUXGA LCD ($1920 \times 1200$ resolution) with LED backlighting.
-
JAN-7201: 19-inch SXGA LCD ($1280 \times 1024$ resolution) with LED backlighting.
-
Powered by an Intel Core i5 processor paired with dual Solid-State Drives (SSDs) for redundancy and high reliability.
-
Primary control is handled via the ergonomic NCE-5605 trackball unit (featuring built-in tactile alerts/vibration). An optional full QWERTY keyboard unit (NCE-5625) can be connected for rapid text entry.
3. Route Planning & Safety Check
-
Integrated graphic and numeric table editing — making changes on the visual chart automatically updates the waypoint table and vice-versa.
-
Allows simultaneous editing and merging of up to 4 routes.
-
Automatic safety checking scans routes for shallow water, obstacles, restricted areas, and user-defined clearance parameters.
4. Chart & Data Support
-
Direct support for S-57 / S-63 ENCs (AVCS, NAVTOR, C-MAP) and ARCS raster charts.
-
Integrated Admiralty Information Overlay (AIO) and dynamic chart licensing support.
-
Stores up to 500 custom user maps with up to 100,000 user-defined marks and annotations.
