The Marine Data MD71TMC is an advanced Transmitting Magnetic Compass (TMC) system engineered and manufactured in the United Kingdom by Marine Data Systems Ltd. Designed to meet IMO resolution A.817(19) requirements, the MD71TMC senses magnetic heading from a standard shipboard main or emergency magnetic compass and converts it into accurate digital NMEA 0183 serial heading data for transmission across vessel bridge networks, ECDIS systems, radar displays, and heading repeaters.
The system comprises the MD71TMC Control Unit paired with an external magnetic fluxgate pick-off sensor (e.g., MD73TMC coil unit) fitted directly to the vessel’s primary magnetic compass bowl. Featuring an intelligent auto-calibration routine and digital deviation table correction, the MD71TMC eliminates manual alignment errors and continuously monitors heading validity. A high-contrast OLED display on the main processing unit presents real-time digital heading, status diagnostics, and deviation offsets, while dual isolated NMEA 0183 outputs drive auxiliary navigation repeaters and steering systems.
Key Features:
• Magnetic-to-Digital Conversion: Converts standard mechanical magnetic compass bowl readings into high-precision digital NMEA 0183 serial heading sentences ($HEHDT, $HCHDG, $HCHDM).
• Intelligent Auto-Calibration Routine: Built-in semi-automatic deviation correction algorithm automatically calculates and compensates for vessel magnetic deviation.
• Dual Isolated NMEA 0183 Outputs: Dual optical-isolated NMEA serial ports allow simultaneous data transmission to ECDIS, RADAR, Autopilot, and remote heading repeaters.
• High-Contrast OLED Interface: Clear front-panel OLED screen provides live magnetic heading indication, system status, and intuitive menu-driven calibration.
• Off-Course & Fault Alarms: Integrated audible and visual alarms monitor magnetic compass signal integrity, power loss, and off-course threshold deviations.
