Skipper, EML 1100/1200 Speed Log

The SKIPPER EML 1100 / EML 1200 series represents legacy electromagnetic speed log systems designed for commercial and merchant vessels. While functionally similar in core measuring physics to the newer EML 224 series, the EML 1100/1200 generation utilizes a dedicated analog/digital bridge display electronics package and older-generation junction processing units.

Model Breakdown

  • SKIPPER EML 1100: Single-Axis Electromagnetic Speed Log measuring longitudinal Speed Through Water (STW) ahead and astern.

  • SKIPPER EML 1200: Dual-Axis Electromagnetic Speed Log measuring longitudinal (ahead/astern) and transversal (port/starboard) Speed Through Water (STW).

Operating Principle

The system utilizes Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. The hull-mounted electromagnetic sensor creates an AC magnetic field in the boundary water layer. As seawater passes through this field, an electrical voltage proportional to speed is generated across two sensor electrodes, converted into digital speed measurements, and output to shipboard navigation equipment.

Key System Characteristics

  • Flush Hull Mount: No moving parts or mechanical paddles to clean or jam; minimal hydro-dynamic drag.

  • Zero Depth Dependence: Operates reliably from 0 meters depth (no minimum water clearance beneath the keel required).

  • Retrofit Capabilities: Hull sensors can be mounted using standard SKIPPER sea valves (60 mm / 100 mm) or welding tanks, frequently used as direct drop-in replacements for older Simrad NL-Log setups.
