The Furuno FM-4850 is a professional-grade “Black Box” Marine VHF Radiotelephone. Unlike standard fixed-mount radios, the main transceiver unit is hidden away, while all operations are managed via the HS-4800 handset. This makes it a premier choice for center consoles or modern glass bridges where helm space is at a premium.

It is often described as a 5-in-1 tool, combining a VHF Radio, Class D DSC, AIS Receiver, GPS Receiver, and a 30W Loud Hailer into a single networked system.

• Black Box Design: The compact, waterproof (IP67) transceiver can be mounted under the console or in a locker, keeping the dash clean and clutter-free.

• Built-in AIS Receiver: When networked with an MFD (like NavNet TZtouch3), it overlays AIS targets directly on your charts.

• Multi-Station Capability: Supports up to three handsets (HS-4800) and three speakers (SP-4800). This allows for full intercom functionality between the bridge, tower, or cockpit.

• Loud Hailer & Listen Back: Includes a 30W amplifier with 8 automatic fog signal patterns. The “Listen Back” feature allows the horn speaker to act as a microphone, bringing sounds from the deck or fishing lines back to the handset.

• Advanced DSC Integration: When connected via NMEA 2000 to a Furuno MFD, you can initiate DSC calls simply by tapping an AIS target on your plotter screen.

• GNSS Performance: Includes a built-in 72-channel GPS receiver. Note that while the processor is internal, an external antenna (like the GPA-017) is required for a signal if the black box is mounted deep inside the vessel.
