The SAILOR 6194 Terminal Control Unit (TCU) is a critical component in the Cobham/SAILOR mini-C series of maritime satellite communication systems. It serves as a central interface and control unit, enhancing the functionality and integration of these systems on board vessels.
Core Functions:
- Ship Security Alert System (SSAS) Integration: The TCU is specifically designed to manage and connect the hidden alarm and test buttons for the Ship Security Alert System (SSAS). It can handle up to six alert buttons and one test button, simplifying SSAS installations and providing error messages for faulty connections or buttons. This is particularly useful for upgrading existing SSAS systems from older SAILOR models.
- Interface Bridging: It acts as a crucial bridge between SAILOR 3027 mini-C terminals (which primarily use a CAN bus interface) and other ship equipment that utilizes Ethernet or RS-232 serial interfaces. This enables seamless data exchange and integration within the vessel’s communication network.
- Vessel Monitoring and Control (SCADA/Scripting): The TCU features a microprocessor that allows for the execution of custom scripts. This capability enables it to react to various events registered by the unit, making it suitable for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications and general vessel monitoring tasks.
- System Status Indication: It incorporates a set of LED indicators that provide quick visual feedback to operators on important system parameters, such as Inmarsat signal strength, login status, GPS fix, DNID (Data Network Identifier), and program download progress.
- Software Updates and Diagnostics (ThraneLINK): The TCU is fully supported by the ThraneLINK Management Application, a Windows-based software. ThraneLINK is a proprietary communication protocol that networks SAILOR products, enabling easy remote monitoring, diagnostics, and software updates for all connected Cobham SATCOM devices. This significantly optimizes maintenance and reduces troubleshooting time.
- GLONASS Positioning (Optional): With an optional GLONASS module, the TCU can provide GLONASS positioning data, which is especially relevant for vessels operating under certain flag states or in specific regions.
