The RC25 Rate Compass is a heading sensor used in older Simrad autopilot systems (e.g., AP35, AP50 and similar models). It combines two types of sensors:
-
A rate sensor that detects changes in heading (how fast the boat is turning), and
-
A fluxgate magnetic sensor that measures compass heading.
-
🧭 Why a Rate Compass?
Unlike a simple fluxgate compass alone, a rate compass is great for autopilots because:
-
The rate sensor responds quickly to turning motion without being confused by pitch and roll.
-
The fluxgate part keeps the heading from drifting over time.
Together this gives a stable and responsive heading input that helps the autopilot steer accurately.
